SECOND TRIBUTE TO IANNIS XENAKIS

Following on from the success of their pervious tribute to Iannis Xenakis, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in association with the Center for Music Composition & Performance (CMCP) has organized a second sequence of events in tribute to the composer, which is to take place from September 15 to October 11, 2009.

The exhibitions and presentations will take place in the hall for new displays as well as the mezzanine floor of EMST from 15-9-2009 until 11-10-2009.

MUSICAL EVENT:

Concert – Lecture: “Nomos A”
presented by Christophe Roy, cellist
and Makis Solomos, lecturer

Tuesday 15/09/2009, 20.00

Makis Solomos will give a description and explanatory analysis of various sections of Nomos A by Xenakis. Musical examples and illustrations will be provided by Christophe Roy on the cello, who will then present a performance of the entire piece as a conclusion to the session. [Duration: 45’]

The French cellist Christophe Roy is considered a specialist in the interpretation of works by composers such as I. Xenakis, M. Kagel, V. Globokar and others. He frequently performs as a member of various chamber music ensembles including the Ensemble Intecontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Newt Hinton Ensemble, Ensemble Modern Frankfort and Ensemble Aleph. His discography includes several solo cello and chamber music recordings as well as his recent CD with music for cello ensembles. Christophe Roy has also been awarded a special prize in the Gaudeamus Competition in Rotterdam.

The exhibition will be open to the public on the opening day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

At 7:00 p.m. Antonios Antonopoulos will lead a guided tour of the museum halls where the 2nd Xenakis exhibit is located.

Iannis Xenakis

Iannis Xenakis is considered one of the great innovators in 20th century music. Well acquainted with ancient Greek philosophy, mathematics and architecture, he was among the first to apply mathematical and physical theories to his compositions and to combine graphics within the final acoustic outcome. His creative procedures led to a unique compositional style and a new approach to musical thought which is today internationally recognized.
